It is interesting to learn that the Taj Mahal had 20,000 laborers work in building the structure. It is also said that Shah Jahan had ordered the hands of the craftsmen and architect who were involved in the construction of the Taj Mahal to be chopped off. This was to prevent them from building another grand monument like this. Shah Jahan had also planned to build another Taj Mahal in black marble as his tomb. The dome and walls of the Taj Mahal were first covered with semi precious stones and gems which were unfortunately plundered in wars. There are also claims by some European scholars that the architect of the Taj Mahal was an Italian architect, Geronimo Veroneo. However there is no proof or evidence to prove this true. |
