Aligarh Muslim University
Aligarh Muslim University is located in the city of Aligarh of Uttar Pradesh. It was one of the first universities started during British Occupation. This university was established by the Indian Muslims and was modeled according to the University of Cambridge. The Aligarh Muslim University was first Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College and its founder, the Muslim social reformer Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.

This is a residential academic institution of UP that offers more than 250 courses in both modern and traditional branches of education divided into 12 faculties like Medicine and Social Science, Arts, Commerce, Life Sciences, Law and Management Studies and Research. At present 30,000 students study here under over two thousand faculty members spread over eighty departments of study.

Not only do students from India study here, Aligarh Muslim University beckons students from numerous countries including countries in Africa, West Asia and South East Asia. In fact, some courses are also reserved for students from SAARC and Commonwealth countries. Aligarh Muslim University also hosts one of India’s premiere engineering colleges, Dr. Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology.

The objective behind this university was not only to provide knowledge to its students. In addition to this, the university offers the necessary skills and mental attitude needed to face the vagaries of life. It can be said that Sir Syed made a distinction between Talim and Tarvibat in his college where the former made a person ready for a job while the latter makes a refined person.

There is a hall of residence which is a cluster of hostels managed by a provost and numerous teacher wardens in charge of different hostels. Inmates dine in the common Dining Hall while the halls of residence each have a common room with facilities for indoor games, library, sports clubs, a reading room and a cultural and literary society. There are many clubs in the university encouraging different games and sports facilities like a riding club, a nodal agency for hiking and mountaineering and a swimming pool. Other game facilities like hockey, football, gymnasium, cricket and badminton too are available.
