UP Public Service Commission
The British Indian government was compelled into considering the setting up of a public service commission with the indianisation of superior Civil Services. With this, the first commission was set up on October 1st, 1926 which failed because of its limited advisory functions. It was only after the setting up of the Federal Public Service Commission under the Government of India Act, 1935 that the first UP public service commission was formed at the provincial level on April 1st, 1937.

The headquarters of the UP Public Service Commission is at Allahabad. At inception, it was situated in a few rooms of the then Secretariat. However today the UP public service commission is spread on a lavish campus at Allahabad and has a camp office found in the UP state capital, Lucknow. At the beginning, only 9,811 applications were disposed of; today this has increased to over a few lack applications every year.

The UP public service commission has changed with the times and is now undergoing massive computerization. There are two examination centers in Allahabad and Lucknow which caters to the needs of 3,000 candidates at a time. In a bid of keeping with the increased work of the public service commission, there are now 8 members in the UP public service commission.

Today the UP public service commission is regulated by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission Regulation of 1976. The main functions of the Public service commission lies in conducting of examinations for appointment to services of the Union and state. The UP Public Service Commission also assists states needing help in framing and operating schemes of recruitment for services requiring special qualifications from the candidates.

In addition to this, the UP public service commission is consulted on recruitment of civil services and posts, principles of making appointments, disciplinary matters of people serving the Government of India and many other functions. So it can be seen that the UP public service commission plays an important part in the governing of Uttar Pradesh and its country.
