All the states of India have their individual governments and accordingly, Uttar Pradesh has a government, the UP government. Under the constitution of India, the UP government was formed with a Governor and a bi-cameral legislature ruling the state. This legislature is part of a parliamentary form of government that is divided into legislative, judicial and executive branches.
The executive branch of the Uttar Pradesh government is head by the governor. The governor of UP is aided and provided advice from a group of ministers, the Council of Ministers. This council of ministers is headed by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The present chief minister of Uttar Pradesh is Mayawati, who is running her fourth term as chief minister of UP. The UP government consists of two houses; the Legislative Council or the Upper House that is also called the Vidhan Parishad and the Lower House that is also called Vidhan Saba. The Vidhan Parishad is a permanent body of the UP government. It was on May 13, 2007 that Ms. Mayawati assumed office with her forty-nine member council of Ministers. The present Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Mr. T.V. Rajeswar was the person who administered the oath of office to Ms. Mayawati, the leader of Bahujan Samaj Party. Her cabinet consists of 19 cabinet rank ministers, 20 ministers of state and nine ministers of state, most of whom belong to Scheduled Castes. Today Ms. Mayawati, India’s first Dalit woman chief minister is the most popular and most politically important chief minister of the very conservative state of Uttar Pradesh. The UP government has announced a reservation policy for industries in the private sector so that poor and upper caste people are promised jobs. With this decision, new industries and business units in Uttar Pradesh have to reserve 30% of their posts for three different types of employees. The seats will be divided equally between scheduled castes, other backward castes, minority communities and economically weak among upper castes. |
